PEDODONTI

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

What is pediatric dentistry?

Pediatric Dentistry is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on preserving, treating, and managing oral and dental health in children and adolescents, along with addressing dental issues specific to these age groups. Pediatric dentists, also known as pedodontists, are experienced professionals who have received specialized training to maintain the oral and dental health of children at an optimal level.

When do baby teeth come in?

Baby teeth typically start coming in during the first 6 months of a baby’s life, and this process continues until around 3.5 to 4 years of age. There are a total of 20 baby teeth, 10 in the lower jaw and 10 in the upper jaw. These teeth play a critical role in a child’s nutrition and speech development.

However, there is often confusion among families regarding the 6-year molar. This tooth is actually a permanent tooth and usually erupts around the age of 6. At this stage, parents may sometimes mistake it for a baby tooth and consider having it extracted. But dentists emphasize that the 6-year molar is an important permanent tooth and should be preserved.

Your dentist will guide you to maintain the proper alignment and health of both baby and permanent teeth in the mouth. Remember that having the correct information helps you support your child’s oral health to the fullest.

Fissure sealant (Protective Filling) is a treatment especially applied to the first and second molars, typically between the ages of 6 and 12. With this treatment, the natural grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of our teeth are filled at a micro-level using special materials, without any damage to the tooth structure, and these fillings do not cause any height or pain issues.

These sealants allow young children, whose motor skills are still developing, to brush their teeth much easier and effectively, thus protecting the teeth with the highest potential for decay over the years. This is achieved without any decay occurring in these teeth for years to come.

Indirectly, it serves as a kind of insurance for parents who may not always be able to be present while their young children brush their teeth, or in cases where the final brushing by a parent cannot be ensured.
